Powertrain / Under The Hood • Re: Definitive PTU failure symptoms...or reasons for awd not working?

Keep in mind that under normal conditions even the AWD Flex operates mostly in FWD to improve fuel efficiency.

If you want to know if your ptu has gone bad, the most visible symptom is black fluid dripping from the ptu vent which you’ll see on the ground. You’ll also most likely smell it.

If you’re seeing that, then you may still be able to temporarily save the ptu internals with a drain and fill. The ptu only holds like 16oz so you’ll want to change it regularly.

If the fluid comes out black then you know it’s on its last legs. But if it comes out a light brown then your ptu is most likely fine.

If you’re not at that stage yet with the black dripping fluid then another symptom is indeed a whirring sound but it could be a few other things as well.
