FYI, the PTU is always turning any time the vehicle is in motion on our AWD cars. Technically it IS a "transfer case" PTU is Power Take-off Unit, it is constantly turning whether or not it's powering the rear wheels.
What I really don't understand is how Ford can say or think this is a "forever" fluid i.e. it does not need to be changed, ever, OMG
, right !
I asked about this prior to my 100K warranty expiring, they never changed it. At 130K my PTU started to stink, the fluid had turned to sludge and was technically burning and not lubricating. I did a pretty extensive write up on this here on our Forum back then. It's a shame Ford has gotten away with this for so long.
I’ve been extremely lucky that my PTU has lasted this long, I'm now past 90K since my first PTU fuild change, thinking I have changed the fluid now 4 times, PTU is still alive thank God. It lives in the most hostile environment located in a small pocket wedged in between the engine, transmission and the turbos hot exhaust, not much airflow down there.
Keep changing your PTU fluid folks!
