OK a full year later and I'm about to finally get to installing the new clear Morimoto lenses. Research shows the OE lens on the Bosch E46 projectors, for the US market, get those tiny little "dots" or pimples on the lens which somewhat diffuse the light output, I still contend these lenses have gone "cloudy", we're about to find out ...
What finally prompted me to take action is/was that one of my L.E.D. H-11 CMB DRL Foglight bulbs had gone dim. GTR was kind enough to replace, under warranty, not just one, but both bulbs (so they will both be new) even though it was a few months over the 1 year warranty period, Bravo GTR.
I finally purchased a pair of TYC replacement Foglight assemblies, saving over 50% on OE pricing, and now it's time to do all the lighting improvements at once.
I'm hoping the lens material on the TYCs are as tough as the OE. I think the OE material is glass, where the TYC says there plastic, Ploycarbonate I hope.
Next week the new LEDs come in and I'll be tearing off the front facia and getting to work. I'm expecting/hoping this will be a smooth operation. I'm thinking once the Projectors are on the bench, I'll disassemble them and carefully clean the reflector with alcohol to remove any "haze" that may have built up from 13 years of use.
I'm still on the fence about IF I should be considering another pair of better HID bulbs. I really like the OSRAM CBIs installed last year except for the loss of forward lighting. Yes they light really well for the first few car lengths, and they look awesome being tinted blue (I think rated at 5,500K), but the far reaching distance lighting has suffered.
The OSRAM 66340XN2 XENARC NIGHT BREAKER 220 LASER Next Gen, Bi-Xenon HID bulbs, (say that 3 time fast) according to on-line testing, puts out something like 220% more light over OE, but I think the blue tint is gone. The current price has dropped to around $154, down from +$200 last year.
Who has had, what experience, with what brand HID replacement bulbs? As we have discussed, the further away from 4,300K, the forward lumens tend to drop as we pick up that cool blue LED look.
Give me a week or two, and I'm hoping to do a full write-up and review on this next install.
