I felt more comfortable removing the module and doing the update on a bench in my basement, mostly due to worries of my battery discharging too much during the process. You'd need a ~120-ohm resistor and some little Dupont jumper wires. I know my battery is bad though
I'm not exactly sure what calibration unlocks the extra features. Our vehicles are CGEA 1.2 if any guide makes that distinction -- most models were 1.3 by the time Sync 3 came out, and by Sync 3.4 it was really just the Flex/Taurus/MKS/MKT still using 1.2
