Back in 2017 I purchased my first Flex, a 2014 LTD with all the bells and whistles, and it was great and extremely reliable. Then on Feb 27, 2023 @ 01:27, I was driving home on a highway with very separated at grade intersections and traffic lights. As I was approaching a light that had just turned green, with a car in the left turn lane and a 18 wheeler in the right thru lane. I and accelerated from 50 to 70 (in a 65)(yes I know), I was passing the 18 wheeler, and all of a sudden the car in the left turn lane went through the gore and accelerated as he drove into my drivers side door, riding up and busted my mirror and then drove me into the 18 wheeler's bumper. I just about tore the truck's bumper off, bending it -90 degrees, my engine was killed, and I fought to keep control and not flip (yes that is how hard the the impacts were). I pulled to the gore for the right side traffic to turn into my lane and stopped, as I had lost all control of the right wheel. While I was doing that, the car that hit me took off (he didn't get too far away, when the police found him about 15 minutes later). All the damage to my FLEX seemed only superficial (broken A Frame, and Right Front Quarter crumpled, door jammed, and then a long scratch along the left side, broken mirror). Little did I know that it was going to be totaled, as the Right side transaxle was pushed through the front of the engine and into the #1 cylinder. I was extremely upset losing a vehicle that was so well designed that it too that hard of impacts, that 1) I was not injured and 2) looked like the damage was so minor, while the other car was literally destroyed and destroyed the truck's bumper (bent forward 90 degrees). That is why I spent a while looking for another FLEX, albeit a SE and without all the bells and whistles I had. As an Army Veteran, I will certify that the FLEX was built safe, like a tank and needs to be brought back by Ford Motor Corporation!!!!!
BTW: The driver of the car that caused the wreck was charged with: DUI, Underage DUI, Driving with a Suspended License (for a prior Underage DUI), Open Container, Felony Hit and Run. I hope that the DA threw the book at him,, and got a Detainer from ICE.
