Ford Introduced the Flex in 2008 Auto Show in Chicago. The car was on the floor, locked. Following year, 2009, same thing but had it unlocked so you could sit in it. I was impressed, at the time we were looking for a 5 passenger vehicle, many many choices. We had settled on a Hyundai Veracruz in 2008, trading in a Prius and making a few grand on it. It was front wheel drive, which turned out to be a mistake where we live, nearly went off the road into a ditch from loss of traction, the rear broke loose. We talked it over and decided to look for the Flex. Found a 2010 SEL Ecoboost. Thats right an SEL Ecoboost. After 2010, you could only get an Ecoboost in a Limited. We liked the car a lot, but decided we would be better off with an F150. BIG MISTAKE! I regretted getting rid of the Flex within a week.
In 2013 I bought a Fusion Hybrid, the new design. It turned out to be a lemon of godly proportions, it was one of the first built, never again. After some back and forth the dealer had a black Flex Limited Ecoboost. He made me a great deal on it, and I LOVED that car. I called it Darth Vagon because the front looked like the helmet from the new at the time Star Wars movie. All it needed to complete the look as to black chrome the rear applique. Unfortunately I lost it in a head on crash during a whiteout storm in February 2014. A white car was dead in the middle of the road with no power to the lights. Saw it a second before hitting it, then got rear ended by of all people, the first responder that was enroute to this scene. It had hit another car coming from the other way. Neither I or my wife were hurt even from a double impact. I replaced it with an MKT that I found a good deal on.
The MKT was nice to drive, but found that the floor room in the second row was smaller, and taller people couldn't sit in the rear. I found a new 2014 F-150 to replace it, which I loved from the start, but again lost it in a winter crash when opposite traffic lost control and slid into my lane where I couldnt avoid it. Any way a few trucks later, we found we needed a truck regardless. I have a 2019 F-450 but diesel is so damned expensive and so are tires when it needs 6 of them that a second car would be better. My Mother inlaw had a 2014 Flex Ecoboost Limited and yes I envied them. Kodiak Brown Limited with the Appearance package, just like the 2013 I had. She bought a new Subaru and sold me the Flex for $4500 and I now drive it every day. LOVE the Flex! LOVE the Ecoboost.
TL;DR, long story short. I have back issues and cannot sit in a regular car, but driving a pickup is fine. The Flex has a LOT of room, though not was much front leg room as I like, however, my problem with cars is I can't sit for long with my legs stretched out in front of me like in a car, but when sitting like in a chair, no problems, and the Flex does that since it sits me up higher and I can sit with my foot on the floor. The second row has TONS of leg room and the third row eve I can sit in, if I can get back there. Being 60 has it's days IYKWIM.
I LOVE the Flex for several reason, the looks, the room, but especially the low center of gravity with the Ecoboost power. It's my Power Wagon, Sorry Dodge, but the Ecoboost Flex IS the REAL power Wagon! It is a thrill to drive every day. A sports car that is easy to get in and out of.
