General Ford Flex Discussions • Questions on driving in the mountains

Relatively new to driving a Flex. I have some questions on driving in the mountains that I thought I would post here and see what the gurus can provide for insight.
We have a 2019 Limited AWD non turbo. We are on our vacation and drove to Washington state from Iowa. I am curious about driving characteristics of the Flex going up and down the mountain passes out west. I have noticed that when going upgrade, if the grade is steep enoungh, it will downshift like I would normally expect. Kinda like going into passing gear. Now going downhill seems to be different from what Im used to in other cars. When we go downhill, Im trying to keep the transmission from shifting back and forth, so Im watching the tach and feeling for how the car is operating. I dont ride the brakes, just brake enough to keep speed in check. But what I do notice is that there is some slight pulsing in the car. Kinda like the car applying the brakes by itself or the tranny trying to shift but not. When Im feeling this happen, the tach doesnt indicate any change in engine rpm to say its trying to shift. What could be happening? Is this part of the Advancetrak system?
Also note Im being kind of hyper vigilant / cautious with this car as it is our replacement for our 2018 AWD that blew a transmission halfway into this trip.
What kind of driving tips do you guys have for mountain driving?
