Broke down hundreds of miles from home. I can't get under it, so it's at the local dealership... on a Friday afternoon. From what I'm hearing, I suspect one of the hanger bearings has went out. Back when I was having PTU problems, I discussed just removing the ft -> back shaft with the local dealership mechanic, but didn't. He gave me the impression the car would have no problems, as the PTU is a parasite box. In other words, it merely taps power from the front shaft instead of being an integral part of the front drive train. If my diagnosis by ear is correct, I'm thinking of telling them to remove it to cut time and cost while on the road.
Question is, is anyone here running with the ft -> back shaft removed, and if so, have you had any problems? I wanted to stay away from the AWD because of needing matched tires, so effectively making the car the normal ft wheel drive doesn't bother me at all.
