I like this car so much that it’s now my third (new to me) used Flex Limited. My first was a White/tan 2011 that had about 26k miles on it (I’ve been on the forums since I got that first one). I ran it into the ground in just 3 years as a commuter in the metro DC area.
Sold the 2011 to Carmax and then bought a Red/tan 2014 Limited with 31K miles on the odometer just before I retired as a govt contractor in March 2015. In the nearly 9 years since then I put about 86k miles on it. I had some drivetrain issues with it some 4 years ago that my extended warranty took care of at no out of pocket cost. That $1800 extended warranty paid for itself. I highly recommend anyone to purchase one if they buy a low mileage used vehicle.
At any rate, other than the aforementioned drivetrain issues, that 2014 has been a reliable go to main vehicle for the last 9 years. I retired to the mountains of the far NW corner of North Carolina. I rescue dogs and I specifically like the fact that the 2nd and 3rd row seats fold flat to provide room for up to 4 medium sized dogs at a time. I call it my “Dog Mobile”. I also like the Flex for its full size SUV storage space but also that it handles like a car rather than a truck. I love it here in Ashe County but the mountain roads are very twisty/curvy so the handling is very important.
Then…this past Friday afternoon (12/29/23) while coming home from the grocery store I had a medical issue and ran off the road, hit a power pole and came to rest in a field next to the New River. The Flex was totaled but me and two of my dogs were uninjured. I think I can honestly say that the AWD saved our lives. I had blacked out for a second on a left handed curve, came to heading directly towards the power pole and managed to swerve just enough to sideswipe the pole instead of hitting it head on. Just a FYI, no drink or drugs were involved. The whole right side was trashed and the frame bent. Fixing it just made no sense. It had 116k miles on it and was showing its age. The bodywork would have been in excess of $10k and I had dropped collision coverage because of its age and mileage, so no insurance for repairs.
So I hopped on the internet and found…
A nice dark red/ tan interior Limited AWD from Carvana with only 42k miles on it. I dislike debt but had to jump on this one so now I have the car payment blues again. At my age and health (74) I’m unlikely to need another main vehicle in this life so I’m guessing this is it. There’s a lot of used Flex’s out there but it’s increasingly hard to find one that’s loaded with low miles and in good shape. Like everyone else here I’m sad that Ford stopped making them. Maybe they’ll bring it back in a few years but who knows?
Carvana will be delivering it to my driveway next Saturday.
