Powertrain / Under The Hood • Re: Different cooling fan issue

I know this is an old thread. But I am responding in case it might help anyone who has this problem.

This winter my cooling fans began racing no matter the ambient temp, and no matter whether I had the AC or heater on. I could see that both fans were turning. So I did not think it was a fan issue. I replaced the fan controller (I bought an inexpensive one $30), and it made no difference. I was told that the coolant sensor could be the problem. That made no sense because the coolant temp registered just left of center. Replacing the coolant temp sensor would have been a bear to do. But I was prepared to do it.

Then spring hit. We got a few 80 to 90 degree days. So I turned on the AC. Nothing but hot air. I wondered if the AC had a leak. Put on the gauges, and saw that the refrigerant was WAY HIGH, dangerously so. What gives?

About four years ago I changed the water pump and timing chain, etc., etc. I had to capture the refrigerant, break the AC line, remove the tchain cover, etc., etc. When I replaced the refrigerant, I must have put extra in. But why did this become a problem only now?

Up until now the AC pressure sensor worked. But now it had failed. I replaced it. Then captured refrigerant until the frig levels were proper, and the cooling fans went to normal. Also, the AC blows cold cold cold.

The AC can fail to work whether it is undercharged or overcharged. Gotta get the level just right. Hope this helps somebody.
